Tideswell Walk - December 19th

Posted 19/12/2015

Our final walk of 2015 commenced from the beautiful village of Tideswell. Quite a few of our group arrived early for the walk and managed a pre walk cuppa and a look around the local church, which is dubbed the Cathedral of the Peak.

Our walk took us out of Tideswell over tracks and fields to the Limestone Way before heading to Monks Dale, one of Derbyshire's lesser known Dales which is completely unspoilt and quite beautiful.

It is fair to say that the walk through Monks Dale was quite challenging on a rocky riverside path, which was sometimes punctuated by paddling in the swollen river too.

In true DVWG style, our party dug in and rose to the challenge, negotiating Monks Dale successfully without too much difficulty and injury free. David Richardson and Mark Bagley certainly helped out to keep people safe on some tricky bits, indeed Mark showed his own brand of survival skills with his fashioning of a makeshift log bridge for a particularly difficult part.

The negotiation of Monks Dale was a slow process and despite our original intention to complete the walk back to Tideswell via the Monsal Trail and Tideswell Dale, upon reaching Millers Dale and having a brief refreshment stop our party of 15 decided to complete our route back to Tideswell on the road as the remaining daylight time was seriously limited.

Returning to Tideswell we were treated to the village Christmas lights looking simply stunning at dusk.

Overall today's walk was a stunningly beautiful 6.7 miles walk, which would be an excellent spring or summer walk. Our party of 15 laughed along in seasonal high spirits and many kisses and hugs were exchanged at the end of the walk as this ever growing group of friends parted for the last time in 2015 with seasons greetings for each other.

Our new DVWG beanie hats were unveiled today too and they looked excellent, well done to Nick Powell for coming up with these hats.

Our final congratulations go to Emma Powell and Diane Marshall who clocked up 100 miles walked season to date today, the first time this feat has ever been achieved prior to January 1st.
