Micklebring & Beacon Hill Walk - 5th January

Posted 5/1/2020

There was a fantastic turnout for Dearne Valley Walking Group’s first regular walk of 2020 as 26 adults and 1 junior tackled a 7.5 mile circular route from Micklebring to Conisbrough Castle and back.

Setting off from the Grazing Harts pub we set off long Greaves Sike Lane, taking a path down hill and under the M18 motorway before making the short ascent of Beacon Hill which gave excellent views across Conisbrough Park.

After joining Common Lane a spell of road walking followed as we left Clifton and made our way along the B6094 into Conisbrough. Here we made our way to the castle grounds where we had our lunch break, taking advantage of the café and toilet facilities.

A short walk back to the main A630 Sheffield Road followed with us walking alongside the road in a westerly direction before taking Park Lane Bridleway on the left which took us across Conisbrough Parks.

After passing what buildings remain of Conisbrough Lodge we turned left to take a muddy pass across fields back to the M18 motorway, which we again passed under before taking a different path back to reach Greaves Sike Lane in Micklebring. This narrow path saw us endure a short stretch of deep mud before it emerged at the side of a house as we exited to join the road along the driveway. This left a very short stroll back to our start point.

Well done to everyone who walked with us today and congratulations to Russell Yapp who, not only helped out tremendously as back-marker for the walk but also reached 100 miles walked with the group this season.

We also welcome a number of newcomers who walked with us for the first time, so a warm welcome is extended to Dave Ramsden, Julie Ward, Lisa Roberts, Andrea Cockram, Andrea Goldthorpe, Ann Madden, Sam Clarke, Clive Thompson, Alan & Debbie Crabtree, Katie McDevitt, Debra Haran, Helen Malpass and Sharon Watson. We hope you all enjoyed the walk and will walk with us again in the near future.
